During SECS' 50 years serving the community, a neighbor who holds a special place in our hearts is Elaine Cates. Affectionately known as the Mayor of Fountain Square, Elaine was a devoted supporter of her neighborhood and served in many roles at SECS until her retirement.

In honor of Elaine's memory, SECS is renaming our building at 924 Shelby St. as The Elaine Cates Center, or The Elaine, for short.

We will also celebrate a merging of our food pantry services with Fletcher Place Community Center, operating out of The Elaine. Sign up to volunteer here!

If you'd like to contribute to the pantry, we are collecting the items below, or you can make a donation in memory of Elaine at

Items for donation:

  • body wash

  • soap

  • shampoo

  • deodorant

  • toothpaste

  • diapers (any size)

  • baby wipes

  • razors

  • dish soap

  • toilet paper

  • paper towels

Please join us on Friday, April 1st, from 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. at 924 Shelby for a short ceremony and, in true Elaine form, some wacky Elvis-themed fun.
